I have always personally wondered what, or who a Nazarene is. We read from the Bible that Jesus Christ was a Nazarene because "he was from the town called Nazareth" (John 1:45, 46). But, the denomination does not call itself Nazarene for that purpose. There are a few foundation elements that I think are critical in understanding what a Nazarene represents and they follow: missions and holiness. These are only broad topics that I am choosing to talk about, there is much more that goes into understanding Nazarene's but I find these to be the most important.
Phineas F. Bresee, the founder of the Church of the Nazarene, was previously a Methodist pastor in Los Angeles. His main mission was to reach out to the poor people of the area, which also relates to the people from Nazareth. In John 1:46, Nathanael asks, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" They were seen as the poorest people and Phineas took the term and applied it to his mission to reach the poor. This was the early Nazarene mission to reach the poor. Many Nazarenes do not know this and have forgotten the Churches main mission. Yes, we are missionary focused and I am not attacking that we are not doing that, I am simply stating that I did not know this, and am simply giving facts.
Holiness is important to me and important to the Nazarene Church. I never fully understood what holiness is until I came to MVNU and took religion courses. The Church of the Nazarene split from the Methodist Church because of the Methodists Church lack of emphasis on holiness. The Church began to back away from saying that holiness is a crucial act that we need to follow. Phineas Bresee began to pull away from the Methodists because they did not practice holy living.
This is very short and just a brief understanding of what I have learned about who are Nazarenes. If there are any aspects that I did not make clear or that you want to learn more about, I can either write about it or point you to a better source to read :).
