Feeling Gods love?

I thought I would make this post a little more interesting and bring my girlfriend Alycia Jo into this.  She has an amazing blog, that you may want to follow (or you could just follow her on Facebook and twitter :)).  But, in this blog we be discussing how we can feel God in our spirituality in our lives and talk about how we can worship God through it.  I have asked Alycia to join this discussion of "feeling" God's love because she has helped me understanding what "feeling" God's love actually is like.

Q: So, Alycia, a lot of people believe that they need to "feel" God's love in their lives, what would you say to someone like this?

A: Well, I would ask how you actually "feel" someones love.  Even when  you are around a person I don't think you necessarily "feel" their love.  You just know that it is there.  I know that God is much, MUCH bigger than we can imagine and that his love FAR surpasses our understanding, but I believe that love isn't something you feel. It isn't an emotion.

This might be a strange correlation (okay, it totally is strange) but think of it like a drug addiction.  Once you get your high, you have to keep getting more and more to feel high again.  Again, I'm not saying that God is the same as drugs.  But, the theory is the same.  We can experience the Holy Spirit in our lives many, many times and after so long, we get used to it. It's like getting a hug from  you mom. (This is a safer correlation).  The love she has for you doesn't lessen, you just get used to feeling it.  She can show you love in many different ways, you just have grown used to feeling it that you don't feel the love anymore, you almost expect it.

Q: I like that illustration of a mother's love better than the drug one :).  A lot of people believe that God's Spirit should not be something that we should get used to.  What would you say to someone like this?

A: I completely agree. We should not be used to the AWESOME power that is the Holy Spirit.  We also shouldn't get used to many other things that we have grown accustomed to. We shouldn't get used to miracles that God does, but we seem to have grown numb to many of them.  We sometimes lack seeing his beauty in the world. The intricate butterfly, the sky, the stars, people, the perfection that is in the world around us.  The fact that if the Earth was anywhere else, forward, back, or tilted just a bit differently, life wouldn't exist.  We shouldn't get used to the Holy Spirit moving in our lives, but we do. We expect to get that warm fuzzy every time something happens, but I don't think we do. Sometimes, we don't want to hear what the Spirit is saying, but that is a whole other story. :)

Q: One last question, if someone is having trouble worshiping on Sunday morning, or just in their devotionals.  What would you say to encourage this person that God is present in their lives?

A: You don't need to sing a song to Jesus or read your bible to worship Him. (I'm not saying that is bad. Those are good things. Very good things).  You can worship Him through your everyday life.  When you do as He asks you to do.  When you see His beauty in His creation.  When you are walking along and you pray just to thank Him for all he has done for you.  Those are forms of worship.  I believe that glorifying Him through your school work, job, or whatever else you are doing is  worshiping Him.  1 Corinthians 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God".
